FAQs

Everything students keep asking before they start.

If you’re comparing tests, wondering about timing, or unsure how the score works, start here.

What exactly is the Duolingo English Test?
A 60-minute online English proficiency exam you take from home, no test centers, no scheduling stress. It covers reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and results are in your inbox within 48 hours. Over 5,500 universities worldwide accept it, including top institutions in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.
What score do I need?
It depends on where you’re applying. Most universities ask for 100–120; competitive programs may want 125+. Check your target university’s requirement, then aim 5–10 points above it. That extra buffer matters.
How long does preparation take?
Most students are ready in 2–4 weeks. If your English base is already solid, a focused 2-week sprint usually works. If you’re starting from scratch, give yourself more time. PrepLingo builds the timeline around your level, not a generic schedule.
Is it harder than IELTS or TOEFL?
It’s different. The adaptive format means the test gets harder the better you do, so there’s no fixed experience everyone goes through. Most people find the spontaneous speaking and timed writing the trickiest parts.
Can I retake it if I don’t hit my target?
Yes, twice within 30 days, with no lifetime limit. Your score report shows exactly where marks were lost. We use that breakdown to build smarter retake prep around the actual gaps.
Why do people struggle with the Speaking section?
Because there’s no time to think, rehearse, or redo. You’re describing photos, responding to prompts, and handling an AI-style conversation on a countdown. It’s usually not just an English problem. It’s a pressure problem.
The Writing Sample is ungraded. Does it even matter?
Yes. Universities receive it alongside your score and actually read it. A strong sample supports your score. A weak one quietly raises doubts. We train both together.
What are subscores, and why should I care?
Your score breaks into four subscores: Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation, and Production. Many universities check these individually. Knowing which ones matter for your specific program helps you prep smarter, not just harder.
Can I just prepare on my own?
You can, and Duolingo offers free practice material on its website. But most self-studiers realize too late how tricky the speaking and writing sections are. Without feedback, it’s easy to practice confidently in the wrong direction.
What makes PrepLingo different?
We’re built specifically around the Duolingo test, the format, the question types, and the sections that actually decide your score. No generic study plans, no recycled content. Just focused prep around your weak spots, your timeline, and your goal score.

Your target score is closer than you think. Let’s get there.
